CALCULATING PULLEY SPEED

To calculate the pulley speed use the following formulae...
  • The pulley speed for the drive pulley is the same as the motor rpm.
  • The speed for the driven pulley uses the following calculation...
    • Motor RPM multiplied by the Diameter of the Drive pulley, divided by the Diameter of the driven pulley.
    • Both pulley diameters must be measured using the same system. (metric or imperial).
  • If you have JAVA enabled in your browser you can use the calculator below.

The following examples all use a motor speed of 1440RPM, a drive pulley diameter of 3 inches and a driven pulley diameter of 12 inches, expressed as inches, millimetres and feet. N.B. The result is always the same.

Motor RPM * Drive Pulley Diameter / Driven Pulley Diameter = Pulley Speed
1440 X 3 (inches) ÷ 12 (inches) = 360
1440 X 75 (mm) ÷ 300 (mm) = 360
1440 X 0.25 (feet) ÷ 1  (feet) = 360
